Built in wood at the end the 18th century, the theatre was redesigned at the end of the following century to adapt to the Liberty style, with the use of iron and other alloys. Restoration works were carried out by engineer Virgilio Tombolini, former technical director of the Fenice Theatre in Venice. The frescoes realised by Bruschi on the ceiling depict the two muses Thalia and Melpomene watching over Tragedy and Comedy, while the two muses Euterpe and Terpsichore watch over Lyric Poetry and Dancing.
